‘How I Wrote JAMB 12 Times Before Getting Admission’- OAU Student

A student, Kazeem Olajide Bashir, has revealed how he sat for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) for a dozen time, choosing Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, before he was finally given admission in the 2016 UTME.
Bashir, in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST disclosed that he started sitting for UTME, with OAU as his first choice in 2004,and with scores far above 200 ever since then, but never secured the admission.
He said his humble background, coupled with flair for social justice spurred him to put in for Law in no other university but OAU, Ife, which he explained had been his dream university since his secondary school days.
According to him, the dream of studying Law at the first generation university almost got dashed before his face, when he tried for over 8 times without success.
Bashir recalled that after the UTME of 2012, and all his efforts to get admission eventually proved abortive, he became so discouraged but got encouraged by people around him.
“Sincerely, my case is pathetic, I went through a chronic psychological trauma in my quest for gown and wig at OAU. I almost lost my mind, but for constant encouragement from many of my friends and relatives.
“The moral supports from my immediate family, especially my father gave me the requisite impetus to move on till I attained success.
” I have been scoring over 200 in the UTME since 2004, with good grades in the Post-UTME too, although there is no time I ever meet up with the cut-off marks, but there are other candidates in my shoes that have been admitted even with scores lower than mine.
“For instance, I had 245 in 2015 UTME, and got over 50 per cent in the Post-UTME, but unfortunately, I could not make the supplementary list after all my efforts.
“Despite the trauma, I remained focused and determined, I have the conviction in me that if I don’t quit, I will win one day,” Bashir said.
He expressed optimism that notwithstanding his very humble background, there would be “light after the tunnel.”
”People are wondering how I would survive the financial challenge of Law degree, considering my humble background. It may surprise you to know that my father is just a meet seller, while my mother is a petty trader, but that is not a logical excuse for me to quit, I believe there is a way, where there is the will.”

EFL Cup Final!! Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick Doubts For Man United With Injury (Read)

Winger Mkhitaryan scored in United’s 1-0 Europa League last 32 second-leg win over Saint Etienne, but limped off with a hamstring problem after 25 minutes.
Carrick was also substituted just past the hour mark after hurting his calf.
“Honestly, I don’t think Mkhitaryan is fit for the final. I think him and Michael are both out,” said Mourinho.
“You can be injured leaving your house, you can be injured in the garden. You never know when and why.
“Obviously they are important players for us and not to have them both for the final is complicated but I think Marouane (Fellaini) and Bastian (Schweinsteiger) – two players who are normally not playing too much – is a good answer.
“I don’t say they will definitely miss out, I just say what I feel. It’s three days before the final. Even if it’s a minor injury I think three days is no time.”
United beat Saint Etienne 4-0 on aggregate to move into the last 16 of the Europa League and are also in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Mourinho’s side beat Leicester to win the Community Shield in August, but Sunday’s EFL Cup final at Wembley is the 54-year-old’s first chance for a major trophy with United.

Big Brother Naija: Why Federal Government Should Stop The TV Show – Lawmaker

Member representing Epe Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Olusegun Olulade has called on the federal government to reconsider the implications of allowing the Big Brother Naija Show on the Nigerian culture and youths.
Olulade, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, lamented that the contents of the Reality Show were completely foreign to the indigenous culture, which the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was trying to promote.
According to him, the government should swing into action through the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and ensure it stopped the airing of such programme before it further caused serious damage to the culture.
His words: “The content of Big Brother Naijashow is alien to our culture. This show is contrary to the rich cultural values we are trying to promote and bring to the front burner. It is sad that our young children including adults are made to watch such content.
“This kind of programme promotes obscenity and immorality. We must not encourage such if our hallowed cultural heritage would be preserved. We cannot prevent our inquisitive young ones from watching the obscene displays that permeate the show.
“I think the NBC should, without delay, stop this programme if this government means business in the promotion of our cultural values. The show does not add any value to our education, social and economic life,” the lawmaker said.
Olulade, also advised the Federal Government to ensure adequate censor of information being aired and sent to the public, noting that such programme as Big Brother Naija was capable of causing distractions to the Nigerian youths and affecting many families.
“I will want to urge all parents and guardians to be on their guards and guide their children and wards against the implication of allowing them to keep watching the Show. Our children should not be allowed to be corrupt because this may affect their dreamed future,” he added.

Mourinho Blast FA Organizer For Chelsea Tie Before The Europa League Draw

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has blasted the organizers of the FA Cup, for announcing the date of their quarter-final clash at Chelsea before Europa league draws.
United sealed their passage into the last 16 of the Europa League with a 1-0 win over St Etienne on Wednesday.
They face a hectic fixture list over the next few weeks and their game at Stamford Bridge will be played on March 13, sandwiched between their Europa League last-16 first and second legs.
Mourinho is angry that the date was announced before the Europa League draws are conducted this Friday.
“Of course and I feel really surprised that the decision is made before our draw in Europe,” he said.
“Because in this moment nobody knows where we play, nobody knows where the first and second matches are. Imagine we play Chelsea on Monday and then we have to go to the second match in Europe in Russia, Turkey or Greece.
“I think once more the interests, they go in front of the clubs and English football’s interests, and nobody cares about it. But this is what I have.
“I cannot play against Chelsea with the second team. I cannot play against Chelsea with the U21s like Manchester City did last year. I cannot do that – we are Manchester United.
“I don’t do that as Manchester United manager. I don’t do that to the FA Cup because the FA Cup is not guilty of these decisions. The FA Cup is beautiful, the competition is historical. I have to treat Manchester United supporters and the FA Cup in the right way.
“I cannot go there with U21s. Probably they would deserve it, but I don’t do that, so what is going to happen is an accumulation of matches.
“People playing a lot of matches, I have to make some rotation but some of the boys will have to play in all these consecutive matches”, he said.

Soya ‘killing’ women diagnosed with breast cancer

Soy products…experts warn that women shouldn’t start consuming soya milk after a breast cancer diagnosis – because it may limit the effectiveness of treatment. PHOTO CREDIT: authoritynutrition.com
• Active ingredient limits effectiveness of treatment to tackle disease • Breath test detects aggressive tumours with 85% accuracy
It is considered a healthy alternative to dairy milk – and is famously popular among the yummy mummy crowd. But experts warn that women shouldn’t start consuming soya milk after a breast cancer diagnosis – because it may limit the effectiveness of treatment.
Tamoxifen could be inhibited due to soya’s active compound, genistein, interfering with the medicine’s action, a study found.Paradoxically, the naturally-occurring ingredient remains safe for women if it formed part of their diet before diagnosis, scientists claim.
Professor Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Centre, who conducted the biological pathway on rats, explained that timing of genistein intake is crucial.

“Oestrogen drives most breast cancer growth, yet high soya intake among women in Asian countries has been linked to a breast cancer rate that is five times lower than Western women, who eat much less soya,” she said.
“We have solved the puzzle in our rat model. See, while many oncologists advise their patients not to take isoflavone supplements or consume soya foods, our findings suggest a more nuanced message.
“Our results suggest that breast cancer patients should continue consuming soya foods after diagnosis, but not to start them if they have not consumed genistein previously.”
The study, which was published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, could help patients improve the role that diet plays on their treatment.Lead researcher Dr. Xiyuan Zhang added that longtime sustained use of genistein before a diagnosis has a similar action to Tamoxifen.“It inhibits a mechanism called autophagy that would allow cancer cells to survive, which explains why it helps tamoxifen works,” she said. However, starting to consume it after breast cancer develops not trigger anti-tumour immune response to eliminate cancer cells when tested on rats.
Those consuming genistein as adults had a seven per cent chance of breast cancer recurrence after tamoxifen treatment, compared with a 33 per cent recurrence with rats exposed to genistein only after breast cancer developed.
Zhang added: “We do not know yet why this made the animals resistant to the beneficial effects of tamoxifen and increased risk of cancer recurrence.”
Also, a simple breath test could soon be used to detect two kinds of aggressive cancers. The test has proved successful in detecting stomach and esophageal cancers in 300 trial patients – with 85 percent accuracy. Both cancers tend to be diagnosed too late – at which point the chance of surviving five years is slim.
Experts claim this discovery by researchers at Imperial College London could be a game-changer for diagnosis and death rates. It could also save thousands from having to endure painful endoscopy exams, which involves forcing a tube down one’s throat to inspect their stomach.
“At present the only way to diagnose esophageal cancer or stomach cancer is with endoscopy,” lead researcher Dr. Sheraz Markar told the European Cancer Congress 2017 last week. “This method is expensive, invasive and has some risk of complications.”
“A breath test could be used as a non-invasive, first-line test to reduce the number of unnecessary endoscopies. In the longer term this could also mean earlier diagnosis and treatment, and better survival.”
The trial was based on the results of previous research that suggested differences in the levels of specific chemicals between patients with stomach or esophageal cancer and patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms without cancer.
The new research aimed to test whether this ‘chemical signature’ could be the basis of a diagnostic test. In the new study, the research team collected breath samples from 335 people at three different London hospitals.
Of these, 163 had been diagnosed with stomach or esophageal cancer and 172 showed no evidence of cancer when they had an endoscopy. All the samples were analysed with a technique called selected ion flow-tube mass spectrometry, which is able to accurately measure small amounts of different chemicals in mixtures of gases such as breath.
Researchers measured the levels of the five chemicals in each sample to see which ones matched to the ‘chemical signature’ that indicated cancer.
The results showed that the test was 85 percent accurate overall, with a sensitivity of 80 percent and a specificity of 81 percent. This means that not only was the breath test good at picking up those who had cancer (sensitivity), it was also good at correctly identifying who did not have cancer (specificity).
