Naira among four worst global currencies in 2016

A report by Bloomberg LP has rated Nigeria’s naira as one of the world’s four worst performing currencies in 2016.

The naira is said to have lost 36.68% of its spot returns for the year. The Egyptian pound dropped 58.84%, Suriname dollar lost 46.68% and Venezuela’s bolivar went down 37% in the period.

The Russian ruble, Brazilian real, the palladium, the Iceland krona, and silver, which appreciated by 21.31%, 20.96%, 20.08%, 14.42% and 14.41% respectively, ended the year as the best five performing currencies of the world.

Two Africa currencies, the Zambian kwacha and South African rand, appreciated by 11.96% and 11% respectively, to emerge as the sixth and seventh best performing currencies of the world.

The report stated: “It was a particularly bad year for any currency called the ‘pound’. The Egyptian version was the worst performer in 2016 as the nation took the dramatic step of allowing it to trade freely in an attempt to stabilise an economy struggling with a dollar shortage and concerns over social unrest. Britain’s pound tumbled after the Brexit and never recovered.”

It added, “When it comes to currencies issued by governments and central banks, the Russian ruble has been the best performer of the year as the oil market rebounded.

“While the UK currency’s slide didn’t match those in some emerging markets, it did tally the worst performance among major currencies.”

★Mr Eazi Throws Shade At Tekno; Fans React, he got scared and denied it

The newly crowned Next Rated Artists at the just
concluded headies award Mr Eazi posted a
controversial Tweet about choosing to Apple which
is a niche brand instead Tecno which is for the
masses and he chose the former.
First of all, Chosing to have a different sound from
other artist isnt a bad thing. Second of all we can’t
delude ourselves and say Tecno is at Apples level
yet, but fans thought the analogy wasnt apt and it
belittles the Tecno brand. Some people even
believed he was referring to Tekno the musician
after he got disqualified in thesame category.

Christmas: Let`s renew our hope in God– Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State on
Sunday called on Christians in the state to renew
their hope in God as they celebrate the birth of
Jesus Christ.

The governor made the call in his Christmas
message to the people which was made available
in Ado-Ekiti.
He said the birth of Christ gave man the hope of
having reliance in God restored.
Fayose, therefore, urged Christians to be thankful
and appreciate God’s goodness for giving them
another opportunity to celebrate Christmas.
He added that “the only one and true hope is in
God; this festive period symbolises God’s
unfailing love and grace toward mankind and we
must renew our hope in Him.
“While we mark the Christmas period soberly and
with deep reflection on the state of our country,
we must bear in mind that with God, hope is not
lost.”
The governor also urged the people of the state to
be security conscious. (NAN)

Christmas: Avoid intoxicants while celebrating, says cleric to followers

A cleric, Rev.Fr. Leonard Ojorgu, has admonished
Christian faithful against drinking alcohol and
other intoxicants as they celebrated Christmas.
Ojorgu, who is the Assistant Parish Priest of St.
Peter’s Catholic Church, Ediba, Calabar, gave the
advice during the Christmas church service in
Calabar.

He also cautioned followers on the dangers of
borrowing huge sums of money that would later
become financial burden on them just in the name
of celebrating the occasion.
According to him, the month of January is usually
a very difficult period for many families because
of the Christmas and New Year expenditures,
hence the need for all parents and adults to spend
wisely.

“Today is the celebration of the birth of Christ. It
is not a day to drink to stupor because you want
to celebrate.
“Christians should use this period to re-unite
themselves with Christ who is the infant Jesus of
today; Christmas should be celebrated in a
peaceful way and not the other way round.

“During this period, I also urge Christians to stay
away from fornication, adultery and other forms
of sins that may be against the teachings of
Christ,’’ he said.
The cleric called on well-meaning Nigerians to
use this period to assist the sick and needy

There’s only 1 U.S. President, I am till Jan. 20, 2017, Obama warns Trump

Outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama has
told incoming President Donald Trump to
accept the fact that there is only one U.S.
President at a time.
Obama also told the president-elect that he
remains the U.S. President till Jan. 20, 2017,
when he would complete his two-term
presidency of the U.S. and handover to Trump.
Obama’s remarks followed what the White
House termed as Trump’s undue interference
in U.S. policies since his election.
Also ther president-elect had on Thursday,
directed the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Ms
Samantha Power, to veto the Security Council’s
Resolution on Israeli settlements in Palestinian
territory.
However, the Obama’s administration
disregarded Trump’s directive and had gone
ahead to abstain from voting on the resolution
when it finally came up on Friday, drawing
criticisms from the president-elect and his
team.
The White House, in a response by Obama’s
Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic
Communications, Mr Ben Rhodes, obtained by
NAN, said the UN Security Council’s Resolution
was a policy issue that Trump should not
meddle in.
“On the President-elect, the first thing I’d just
say is that there’s one President at a time.
“President Obama is the President of the
United States until January 20th, and we are
taking this action (abstention), of course, as
U.S. policy,” he said.
Rhodes explained that there was no any
communication between the White House and
the President-elect or his staff between when
Obama made his decision and when the vote
took place.
“So I’m not aware that President Obama and
the President-elect spoke about this, but again,
I’m not — President Obama definitely made no
reference to that, so I can’t confirm that this
hasn’t come up at all, but I’m not aware of any
particular conversation they had about this.
“We did hear from the President-elect’s team.
Again, our position has been there’s one
President at a time.
“We’re going to make our decision on this and,
frankly, believe that it’s important that there’s a
principle here that the world understands who
is speaking on behalf of the United States until
January 20th and who is speaking on behalf of
the United States after January 20th.
“And look, the new team will have every
opportunity after January 20th to pursue their
own policies, to take different approaches.
“I’m certain that they will on any number of
issues.
“We’re just reflecting the simple principle that I
think has guided the President-elect transitions
historically.
“Which is that there is one President at a time
and we’re going to execute our duties until the
new team is in place and the new President is
inaugurated,” the Obama’s aide said.
Recalled that following the pressure that Trump
reportedly put on Egypt, the sponsor of the
resolution, Egypt withdrew it on Thursday and
the vote was consequently delayed till Friday.
However, the resolution was put forward on
Friday by Malaysia, New Zealand, Senegal and
Venezuela and the 15-member Council adopted
the resolution by a vote of 14 in favour and with
one abstention – the U.S., which abstained
from voting rather than veto the resolution.

Next Rated Or Not!!! See These 5 BIG Questions For The Headies Organizers In Just Few Days To The Awards

In the wake of the ripples generated by Tekno’s nomination in the next rated category of the Headies 2016 and the subsequent explanation tendered by the organizing committee of the Headies. A couple of grey areas were clarified but a lot more suddenly pop up when you take a closer look.

No doubt, the Headies is the biggest musical award in Nigeria and highly coveted but it is rather surprising that the most controversial category is the next rated category. Could it be the car gift attached? That’s a question for another day. The real question remains: Was Tekno rightly or wrongly nominated? Before I go ahead and answer that, let’s take a look at this year’s next rated nominees;
Tekno, Aramide, Ycee, Mr. Eazi and Humblesmith

With all humility, not disrespecting anyone’s effort, Tekno’s “Wash” and “Pana” easily trumps the best efforts of his co-nominees. When you put out a slew of chart topping hit singles all year round and get nominated alongside Ycee (“Omo alhaji”), Humblesmith (“Osinachi”), Mr Eazi (“skin tight”) and Aramide (“Love me”), it can be frustratingly annoying to say the least but all things considered, we can presume that Tekno will be going home with the Hyundai. In this recession period, a free car is a great gift, if it wasn’t, Olamide and Don jazzy wouldn’t have started the New Year on a sour note but if Tekno feels he is bigger than the car, I will be willing to take it off his hands.

If you ask me, I will say Tekno was rightly nominated and being nominated means his hard work is being recognized. What he needs to understand is that Its not a crime to be heads and shoulders above your competitors, after all first class students share the same facilities with their less gifted colleagues until graduation, thereafter the chaff is separated from the wheat.

Kudos to the organizers of the Headies for taking time out of their busy schedules to clarify things but unfortunately their answers throw up more questions.

⦁ If putting out an album disqualifies you from being nominated in the category (Sorry CDQ), does an EP also disqualify you? I was wondering why Mr 2kay and Rayce didn’t get a nod, could it be that they didn’t submit entries.

⦁ If Reekado banks didn’t put out an album, would he still have been eligible? And if nominated and he gets the most votes, would he have won a second year running?

⦁ Is there a rule or clause that states that once nominated in a year, you can never be nominated again or eligible for nomination again? If no, why is Korede bello and Cynthia Morgan not on the list? They didn’t put out any albums and they both had a good if not great year. Did they also not submit entries? They must really dislike Hyundai.

⦁ A scenario where Tekno wins the award this year, then goes on to have a better 2017 having the top 3 singles in the country without putting out an album, can he win it twice in a row? What happens if he does the same thing the third year, a hat trick of next rateds?

⦁ Is there a set limit for number of years between your first mainstream single and the year of nomination? If no, are you implying that Beazy, Alaye, Niyola, Muna, Splash and General pype to name a few still stand a chance in 2017 or 2018?

Those are just the few questions that readily come to mind. Let’s hope that the organizers of the Headies will do the needful to avoid stories that touch this year and in the years to come

Are You Diabetic? See 8 Healthy Foods For You

Gone were the day’s people tough diabetes only affected old people. Diabetes can affect anyone regardless of age, race, gender, or lifestyle. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and it can be managed.
Water is really important for diabetic patients because they are at risk of dehydration. This is because increased blood glucose depletes fluids and to get rid of glucose in the blood, water is required to pass it out through urine. Here are eight foods that are healthy for diabetic people.

1. Beans

Beans as a whole such as brown beans, honey beans, soya beans, kidney beans are perfect for diabetics. It’s very easy for the layman to say beans contains just protein but that is not true. Beans actually contain; protein, fibre, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals depending on the type of beans. The thing is, the percentage content of protein is far greater that the other classes of food combined together while the carbohydrate content in beans is very little but needed. This is one of the reasons why beans are recommended for people with diabetes. Meals like moi moi, akara, tofu and drinks like soy milk are great for people with diabetes.

2. Vegetables

Vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, water, phytochemicals and antioxidants and generally low in calories and carbohydrates, making them an excellent option for diabetics. Calciferous Vegetables such as; red or green cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Asparagus are perfect for diabetics. They could be eaten raw or steamed lightly.
Allium vegetables such as; Garlic, scallions onion, leeks and shallots are allium vegetables known for their antibacterial properties and low carb content are also perfect for diabetics. They help boost immunity as well as reduce inflammation.
Unripe plantain is also great because it has a low glycemic index. This can be made into “swallow” and taken with diabetic friendly meals or made into a snack.
They are still very good reasons to include leafy green vegetables in your diet, whether or not they reduce diabetes risk. They are high in vitamin and minerals, low carbohydrate content, and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Fresh Fruits

Diabetic patients fear taking fruits because of its fructose content. They think it will increase their blood sugar level. The truth is not all fruits are suitable for diabetics. fruits which contain a high fibre content and low sugar content are good for diabetics.
Fruits with a low glycemic index such as Grapes, Cranberries , Pomegranate, Kiwi fruit, Pears, Plums, Strawberries, Nectarines, Citrus fruits, Apples, Avocados, Bananas, Berries, Peaches, Cherries, Grapefruit, Guava are perfect for diabetics and help in controlling blood sugar. Here’s a point to consider, though, never drink fruit juices made from concentrate. These are packed with sugar and preservatives which are not natural and not suitable.
More: Signs You May Have Diabetes

4. Whole Grains

Whole grains such as Whole Oats, Whole Wheat, Brown rice, Barley, Quinoa, Millet, Acha can help to prevent blood sugar spikes during the day in people living with diabetes. This is because whole grains are rich in fibre which can help slow down the absorption of glucose into the blood. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals which make them a better choice than refined carbohydrates.

5. Nuts & Seeds

Eating any kind of nuts or a mixture of nuts such as; Almond nuts, Walnuts, Cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, Groundnut and Tiger nuts are good for diabetics and it helps lower the risks of diabetes and heart diseases as long as it’s eaten in moderation and also balanced with healthy food choices.

6. Dairy Products

Dairy products such as egg, yoghurt are great for diabetics. This is because they are packed with high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals. Protein not only slows digestion, it also slows glucose absorption, which is very helpful if you have diabetes. Egg intake according to scientists should be limited to three a week. If you only eat egg whites, you can feel comfortable eating more. This is because the saturated fats are contained in the yolk alone.
Also, fermented foods, such as yoghurt, contain good bacteria called probiotics. Probiotics have been shown to improve gut health. When searching for yoghurts, look for yoghurts with high protein content and low carbohydrates, e.g unflavored Greek yoghurt or plain unsweetened yoghurt.

7. Oils (Palm Oil, Groundnut Oil, Vegetable Oil, Olive Oil)

Healthy oils which are good for diabetics include; Groundnut oil, Olive oil, Almond oil, Sesame oil, Avocado oil, Hazelnut oil, Canola oil, Pumpkin seed oil. This is because they are high in monounsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids. and low in saturated fats.

8. Lean Fish & Poultry

Most fish, seafood and chicken (without the skin) are great for diabetics. This is because they are rich in protein, low in unhealthy saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol. Fish is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and it does not have any carbohydrate, so it will not cause blood glucose to rise.
Do you know anyone suffering from diabetes or are you a patient, please share and also tells us how you manage the illness.

Facebook Releases Measures To Addressing Hoaxes And Fake News

A few weeks ago we previewed some of the things we’re working on to address the issue of fake news and hoaxes. We’re committed to doing our part and today we’d like to share some updates we’re testing and starting to roll out.
We believe in giving people a voice and that we cannot become arbiters of truth ourselves, so we’re approaching this problem carefully. We’ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third party organizations.
The work falls into the following four areas. These are just some of the first steps we’re taking to improve the experience for people on Facebook. We’ll learn from these tests, and iterate and extend them over time.
Easier Reporting
We’re testing several ways to make it easier to report a hoax if you see one on Facebook, which you can do by clicking the upper right hand corner of a post. We’ve relied heavily on our community for help on this issue, and this can help us detect more fake news.
Flagging Stories as Disputed
We believe providing more context can help people decide for themselves what to trust and what to share. We’ve started a program to work with third-party fact checking organizations that are signatories of Poynter’s International Fact Checking Code of Principles. We’ll use the reports from our community, along with other signals, to send stories to these organizations. If the fact checking organizations identify a story as fake, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to the corresponding article explaining why. Stories that have been disputed may also appear lower in News Feed.
It will still be possible to share these stories, but you will see a warning that the story has been disputed as you share.
Once a story is flagged, it can’t be made into an ad and promoted, either.
Informed Sharing
We’re always looking to improve News Feed by listening to what the community is telling us. We’ve found that if reading an article makes people significantly less likely to share it, that may be a sign that a story has misled people in some way. We’re going to test incorporating this signal into ranking, specifically for articles that are outliers, where people who read the article are significantly less likely to share it.
Disrupting Financial Incentives for Spammers
We’ve found that a lot of fake news is financially motivated. Spammers make money by masquerading as well-known news organizations, and posting hoaxes that get people to visit to their sites, which are often mostly ads. So we’re doing several things to reduce the financial incentives. On the buying side we’ve eliminated the ability to spoof domains, which will reduce the prevalence of sites that pretend to be real publications. On the publisher side, we are analyzing publisher sites to detect where policy enforcement actions might be necessary.
It’s important to us that the stories you see on Facebook are authentic and meaningful. We’re excited about this progress, but we know there’s more to be done. We’re going to keep working on this problem for as long as it takes to get it right.

Lady robbed on Eko bridge last night narrates her traumatizing experience

TasalaHQ CEO was robbed last night on Eko bridge.
She narrates how 6 armed robbers attacked her
and her driver below.
The most traumatizing thing that has EVER
happened in my life happened this evening.
After an amazing day at @tfdseries , I was stuck in
traffic on Eko bridge, literally 5 mins away from
home. Next thing I know both the front and back
windows of my car were smashed in by armed
robbers. My driver was driving and I was in the
back. There were 2 on each side and 2 on standby
literally just grabbing everything they could from the
car. My handbag and another bag.
One even grabbed my wrist as my phone was in my
hand. @bsrasaki @fifidilly this was while I was
chatting with you guys. It happened so fast I could
not even comprehend what was going on.
My driver immediately got out of the car and told
me to get in the drivers seat and drive home
immediately. I was so shaken I couldn't move at
first but had to snap out of it. The saddest part is
that no one tried to help as my driver attempted to
hold one of them down. There were so many cars
and people on the road but everyone just looked
on.
I thank God that we are both safe, alive and well.
Everything that was lost was material and the car
can be fixed. I've heard these stories before but in
my 4 years of living in Nigeria, this was a first for
me.
Apparently these things happen more during the
festive season. Please let us all be extra careful
and vigilant. These are hard times in Nigeria and
people are desperate. Keep safe!! I'm just super
grateful to God that we were not physically harmed.
The thieves can enjoy rocking my handbag and my
possessions for all I care #staysafe #Nigeria.
