Why I’m shooting 10 Days in Sun City – Comedian AY

AY AND ADESUA on the set of 10 Days in Sun City
Talented Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, aka AY, recently shot a beauty pageant scene in his latest movie, 10 Days in Sun City at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.
PREMIUM TIMES had a chat with the funny man at the location and he opened up on his winning formula, love for film-making as well as his vision for the “Akpos” franchise.
PT: The adventures of Akpos appear to be a never-ending story. What is unique about 10 Days in Sun City?
A.Y: 10 Days in Sun City is another Akpos franchise and one of the series of his adventure. This time around Akpos decides to go to Sun city in South Africa to have some fun. It’s a romantic comedy laced with so much excitement. The idea is also to do our usual collaboration, which is all about having a blend between Nigeria and other countries and this time it has to be South Africa.
PT: Tell us more about the film?
AY: It is shot in Sun City, Johannesburg and Lagos. The hilarious star-studded comedy movie features A-list movie cast from Nigeria such as Richard Mofe-Damijo, Adesua Etomi, Mercy Johnson, Falz The Bahd Guy, 2Baba Idibia, Gbenro Ajibade, Fathia Balogun, Uti Nwachukwu, Yvonne Jegede and Alexx Ekubo to name a few.
The movie also features Miguel Nunez Jr. from Hollywood and hilarious South Africa cast that includes the sensational Amanda Du Pont, comedienne Thenjiwe Moseley, Celeste Ntuli and lots more.
PT:…and the plot?
AY: 10 Days in Sun City’ is a potpourri of love, drama, passion and culture combined with generous portions of comedy. The movie is a feature-length comedy-drama that sees Akpos on another “adventure”, this time, to South Africa, with his girlfriend Bianca.
Bianca is a campus beauty queen who he (Akpos) has sacrificed his livelihood to make successful. After successfully winning a national beauty pageant, BIANCA, ever loyal to Akpos, is now an international celebrity rolling with society’s ‘high and mighty’. She is, amongst several mouth-watering corporate endorsements, global ambassador to, and the face of multi-national cosmetics conglomerate ‘OTAWI’ which is owned by Nigeria’s richest man, Otunba Ayoola Williams, aka ‘The Old Fox’. To Otunba, Bianca represents more than the face of his company, he has plans for her to play a bigger role in the business as well as in his ‘life’. So Otunba decides to embark on the same journey to South Africa. Bianca has no idea what lies in store neither does Akpos. I can’t reveal more.
PT: You have had back-to-back hits with your films and most recently broke your own records. What will say is your winning formula?
A.Y: It has little or nothing to do with spending so much on a film because some people spend much less and make so much returns. The idea to get it right is to spend money in doing the right thing. Gone are the days when we took the audience or viewers for granted with the belief that you can give them just anything. Right now, you cant just feed anyone with any film and think they will accept it. For that reason I made a primary decision that our passion is well established in terms of content and the arts generally.
PT: Many are of the opinion that comedy no longer pays you hence your focus on film-making.
AY: That’s a big lie because year in and out, I have hosted my AY Show in London, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other parts of the world. This (filmmaking) is just a part of the business. It’s always good to diversify as an entertainer because you have the franchise to explore different areas in the entertainment circle. Personally, I can’t sing and that is the only area I won’t venture into but marketing entertainment, doing movies is a total package for me. It makes no sense for people to think that because I’m doing movies I have decided to stop stand up comedy. Kevin Hart is an actor and big time moviemaker. Steve Harvey is a stand-up comedian, a radio talk show host and a stand up comedian. From Chris Rock to Eddie Murphy, the list is endless. People should just learn to accept entertainers and if Dbanj decides to act today it shouldn’t be attributed to the fact that Banky W had a successful debut in acting.
PT: Why must it be a Trip to Jamaica, 30 Days in Atlanta and now 10 days in Sun City?
AY: Akpos loves adventure and he loves travelling around the world. We can’t shoot 10 days in Warri because there are over 4000 Akpos in Warri. Nigerians love to know how their friends and loved ones in other environments and some people haven’t seen or experienced other cultures and practices in other countries like Jamaica. But, such persons will know that you will see it in the movie through the eyes of Akpos. When people ask must I travel abroad to shoot a film? I simply tell them that this is my style. A winning team is a winning formula and I can never change it until when I feel its time to do something else. I know I can’t shoot a horror movie in this part of the world and that is why comedy gives me that extra edge.
PT: Why the choice of Adesua Etomi as your love interest in 10 Days in Sun City?
AY: I chose to star her in the film because she is gorgeous and beautiful. We are shooting a movie that has to do with a beauty queen and when you look at the industry who and who can you present as a beauty queen. We are not saying who is beautiful but who has the qualities of a beauty queen. Adesua fits perfectly into the role.
PT: How much has 10 Days in Sun City gulped so far?
AY: It’s not a figure that I can put together at the moment but it is a whole lot of money. The budget is three times bigger than what I have ever expended on a movie. For instance, this location is a set for a scene in the movie that will not last more than 6 minutes. That is to let you know where we have decided to take this industry.
PT: When is the film premiering at the cinemas?
AY: The premiere will be in June, in summer.

#BBNaija: While ThinTallTony claims being single, pictures of wife, kids go viral

Hours after ThinTallTony (TTT), one of the housemates who survived eviction from the #BBNaija told Bisola, a fellow housemate, that he was single, pictures of his family went viral on the internet.
The family pictures uploaded from his Facebook page showed that TTT is married to Laraba Offiong and blessed with two adorable children.
TTT and Bisola have been getting cozy with each other for some days now and they have confessed to having feelings for each other, although it seems Bisola doesn’t know TTT is married as he never mentioned it.
Bisola had inquired about his marital status and he replied that he is single by God’s grace, thus presenting himself as an unmarried man.
This has evoked reactions from Nigerians as they feel he is deceiving Bisola and has hurt his wife.
Meanwhile, ThinTallTony’s wife continued to campaign for him on her Instagram page even as he survived the Sunday eviction, clearly indicating that he is married.
Here are some of the tweets of reality show Lovers.
@claranichole, “TTT, who are you deceiving, Bisola or God?’’
@K_mahlodi, “Bisola better not be falling for TTT, #team bisola please don’t vote for TTT when he is up for eviction. He is playing with our girl.’’
@bchild11, “for 25 million, someone would deny his family…. Ok na…”
@Bestee_licious,“TTT you were expecting video message, how will you explain to Bisola when your family pops on screen?!’’
@phabulous_phabs, “I have a feeling Bisola will stab TTT when she finds out about TTT being a family man.’’
@Olurops, “Who will help us tell Bisola that TTT is a liar.’’
The struggle for N25 million and a KIA Sorento toughens as the housemates await nominations later on Monday.

Don Jazzy launches free WiFi service in Lagos

Don Jazzy speaking at Flobyt launch in Lagos on Friday
Mavin Records CEO, Don Jazzy, launched his latest business initiative, a free WiFi service -Flobyt in Lagos on Friday.
The unveiling of the initiative was held at Renaissance Hotel in Lagos. Don Jazzy partnered with founder of Tsaboin, Dele Odufuye, to make the dream a reality.
The founders say Flobyt is a free WiFi service installed across partner locations in Lagos like eateries, parks, taxis, buses, restaurants, cafés and many other businesses.
The service is free for patrons of a business who wish to access the Internet while in the premises of the patron locations. The Internet router itself is a plug-and-play device that, according to the founders, does not require much technical know-how to operate.
Speaking at the occasion, Don Jazzy said investing in Flobyt has been a life-long dream of his.
He said, “I have always wanted to play big in the technology space and I looked for people who were sound and had a beautiful track record in the technology space. This is my first business investment in the technology space that is public while I remain a silent partner in others.
“I am really interested in driving Flobyts reach beyond Lagos. Our Wi-Fi is the fastest in town and those who stream our music and content as entertainers are from the US and the UK. We believe that if we improve our services the numbers can improve.”
In addition, Don Jazzy revealed that at specified locations, between 10-30 people can be connected to Flobyt at the same time while in locations with higher traffic, Flobyt Max can provide internet service to 10 – 80 concurrent users.
Don Jazzy at the media unviel of Flobyt in Lagos
On his part, Mr. Odufaye said, “You simply walk into any of our partner outlets and patronise them. While you are at that, you can log into Flobyt’s free WiFi service available. Join the “Flobyt FREE Wifi”. If your browser pops up for authentication, just visit www.mavinrecords.com or click on “Free Access” button shown to you.
“We are using state-of-the-art WiFi technology equipment that balances speed, quality of service, security and data consumption. This equipment is lightweight and easier to manage. These are the technological and business edges.”
Speaking further, Don Jazzy told PREMIUM TIMES that Flobyts will avail Nigerian entertainers an opportunity to begin to eke a living from their craft.
He said, “If it benefits my own company its going to benefit every other entertainer. Now fellow artistes can now have more people accessing their music and if you are staging an event, they can invite Flobyt to activate the venue. That way, they can reach their core fans that are gathered at the event.
Away from Flobyt, PREMIUM TIMES also took the top producer up on some questions pertaining to his his music career and future plans.
When asked if he had an album in the works, he said, “I am not releasing an album anytime soon because I have other artistes whom I need to promote but filmmaking is definitely in the works. I don’t regard myself as an artiste because I am shy and reserved. I don’t like talking in public, I can sing in the studio but performing it on stage is the problem, I don’t want to be regarded as a fake artiste but I will go into movie making in the near future.”

I don’t like talking about my marriage because I have the right to my privacy. Even though I am a celebrity, and lots of people always want to know what’s going on with me, my fans understand why I have decided to shield my wife from public glare.
But I can tell you that I am really enjoying my marriage and it is pure bliss. I was without a wife for seven years and you know what that means for a man, but now, I am happy that I made the right decision.
“When it comes to marriage, it is important to be with someone who understands you and accepts you totally.
My first wife was uncomfortable with my profession as an actor, but that is what I love doing. Acting gives me joy and I will continue doing it as long as I can.

Female Artistes Are Not Respected In The Industry – Yemi Alade

Singer, Yemi Alade, in a new interview, has revealed what her staying power in the music industry is.
The ‘Nakupenda’ crooner, who recently sat down for an interview The Sun newspaper, also talked about her album, and a few other issues.
Read excerpts:-
Last year was a fulfilling one for you as you got endorsed by many brands. Is the pressure getting to you?
No it isn’t. It is better to have so much to do than to be idle. And you know, one can’t get endorsed by similar brands at the same time. If after one or two years your contract expires, then, perhaps, a much more competitive brand would want to take over.
What project are you doing at the moment?
Well, I am still pushing my last album, Mama Africa. And I have dropped like four videos off the album. They include Mama Africa, Koffi, Nagode and Ferrari. And besides, I am working on more videos which would be released very soon.
Your last album was quite Afro-centric, what prompted that decision?
That was the focus. After all, the title is Mama Africa; it definitely had to be Afro-centric.
The music industry is dominated by male artistes, does that put pressure on you?
The pressure is there because I have to keep up with what my male counterparts are doing. It is also tough and challenging because in Africa, women are always looked down upon so there are a lot of physical and psychological issues that we tackle as African female artistes whether you are A-List or Z-list. Well, I have chosen to be on God’s list.
What is Yemi Alade’s staying power?
It is definitely God all the way day in day out. And also the team that doesn’t sleep. Shout out to Effizzy Music Group and of course, there is the passion because money can’t buy passion.

How I Escaped Being Murdered By A Fellow Rapper – Yung6ix

Rapper Yung6ix, has opened up on how he was almost murdered by a fellow rapper in his home.
Speaking with Saturday Beats, the rapper, said he is yet to understand why his friend decided on murdering him.
“I don’t know why my friend would want to kill me but that was one of the most shocking moments of my life. It happened at the studio in my house; I just came downstairs and the next thing I saw was my friend with a gun. I called him but he did not reply. Then I saw the look on his face. He came with some other people. The guy by his side just took the gun from my friend’s hand because he noticed that my friend was already having a change of heart and he did not want to shoot me. When the guy took the gun, he tried to shoot me but I was lucky the gun jammed, so everybody ran away.
“To be honest, I don’t know what could have made him want to kill me. The only issue I think we had was not enough to cause any issue. I was shooting the video of one of my songs in Abuja the same day he was shooting the video of one of his songs that he featured me. I told him that I couldn’t be there for his video because I was working on my own video. I told him that once I returned to Lagos, I would make sure I shoot my part of his video and I would take care of the cost. It was when I got back that he came to my house with a gun.”
He continued:
“They moved him out of our estate because he lived near my house. The police later told us that estate residents had been complaining about him and that they did not want someone who walked around with a gun living in their estate. That was how he was evicted from the estate and I felt bad about it.”
“All that is behind me now and I am thinking of my new projects. I have my record label and a sponsor because immediately I left Storm Records, I decided to be on my own without relying on anyone. Along the line, somebody came to support me financially in the person of Prince Mefe. I decided not to be like other conventional artistes who would rather be very established before signing new acts. Every step I take, I want someone to grow with me the way Olamide also brought some guys up as he was becoming big as a star. Already, I have four artistes signed to my record label, KKTBM, and they are LK Kuddy, S.H.E, Percy, and Sean Dennis.”

The actress made the disclosure in an interview when she launched her YouTube Channel, ToyinAbrahamTV, saying she sold plantain chips as a kid.
“I can speak Yoruba very well and I can speak English small small. Then I can try to talk like a Calabar girl. When I look at my fans, I wonder what I did to deserve such fans, they are like my family now. I can speak Yoruba well, I understand English but not too well,” she said.
“I have been waiting to share my childhood with people. I grew up from a poor background, we were poor physically not spiritually. I used to sell Ipekere, known as plantain chips in English, in traffic.

Toast::: Besides What we Know, can we be privileged to get to know you in person?

Toast::: With your mega expenditure during your 4- day Walk For Love” charity campaign incomoration of United Nation World disability day, calls for Concern, How is your Foundation Funded?
Churchill ::: Yes, that was a memorable charity event. Am glad it was successful. Atleast a lot of the physically challenged were empowered, we lectured them on how to discover ability in disability. Our income comes from favour, goodwill, besides 10% of our profit or revenue from Big Church Group is transferred to charity to the foundation charity account.

Toast::: Recently, your househelp disclosed to an online media that you had issues with wife and you have not been at home just after your December foundation project last year?
Churchill ::: Every family has its ups and downs but I would not want to talk about my family.

Toast::: It was said that after You left home, you were Alleged of having affair with your Female PA?
Churchill ::: Well, it’s funny to me, because I don’t have female personal Assistant, My PA is Mr Paul, who has been working with me over the years. Besides, it was a sponsored blackmail.

Churchill ::: These issues are private to me and my family.

Toast::: Rumour Has that because of domestic violence from you that your wife moved out with your son?
Churchill ::: I wonder where they got such gist from? I don’t believe my wife will say that, besides I frown against such even my foundation preach against domestic violence in some of our charity awareness campaigns. It is obvious that all these channelled attacks are targeted to drag my image and what I believe in to the mud. Well, the truth is that I have never raised my hands against my wife. I have evidence of CCTV Cameras in my mums house when this happened. It can be replayed if you what us to go that far.

Toast::: The news earlier today posted and deleted by one Uche Maduagwu that you have relationship with Bobrisky and Swanky Jerry? What is your take on that?

It’s sincerely beats my imagination to think of such relationship…well, don’t know Bobrisky but got to know Swanky Jerry through my wife. I believe whoever my wife likes as a friend, I also take as a family friend. Am too busy to think of such unpleasant issues, let alone cooking up defence.

Toast::: Your Son’s One Year birthday is few days from now, do you have plans to celebrate it? Guess you will be celebrating him with your wife?
Churchill ::: Oh! My son, I sure miss him so much. I have planned a worthwhile birthday party for him with friends and family members but it’s sad to say that all effort to reach him proved abortive, and this is affecting my business and emotions, The mum won’t pick calls and the nanny,Our son has been with the mother and not at home for now. I truly, should not be granting this interview if this is all about my family. Am very optimistic that the family will unite together for King Andrea birthday even though channels to reach my wife is temporarily off.

Toast::: How Do You perceived all these happening in your family?
Churchill ::: I see nothing in it, it’s a phase of life. Since it does not affect my cheques and savings. But I truly want to call on bloggers or on social media addicts to verify facts before assuming. Every marriage has good and bad moments, it’s just unfortunate that I recently discovered that the alledged marriage instability is making headlines on some media platforms. Please Tonto Dikeh fans and well wishers take it easy on her, guess she is still adjusting to motherhood. With time, it will be well.

Toast::: The news had it that your son owns his own company Kindred Realtors, a real estate firm, don’t you think his is too young?
Churchill ::: (laugh), the company Kindred Realtor was actually one of my companies before I changed it to our son’s name after his birth. I feel it’s one of his benefit to start building up a brand for him as he grows.

Toast::: Back To Your Projects, the Big Church Foundation fearlessly stormed war ravaged Southern Kaduna to provide Aid- the KADA massacre?
Churchill ::: Well, To God be the grace, we went, we touched life and we came back inspite of the Killings. It was a sad experience, they needed food, shelter, medications, (sobs). I just Thank God, many of them smiled with our presence.

Toast::: Big Church Foundation was Loud by December with Billboard Season Greeting and Scholarship in UNIBUJA? Tell us about it?
Churchill ::: The season greeting was the foundation decision which I guess it was good at that time.
